An important symposium at the University of Buckingham

The Buckingham Bag Group launched the “Buckingham Bag” in February 2009 and after this success, we decided to continue working together to make Buckingham more environmentally sustainable in 2010.
The group includes representatives of Buckingham Town Council, Buckingham Traders Association, the University of Buckingham and the Buckingham and Winslow Advertiser. If you are interested in joining us, please e-mail nigel.adams@buckingham.ac.uk.
As we are want to encourage a wider range of environmental activities in the town, we are now called the Green Buckingham Group and we have updated our website to show you what we plan to do.
We have not forgotten about the “Buckingham Bag” and so you will also find information about it on this new website.
1. Hydro generation – This is a scheme to introduce hydro generation for the University from the mill race in the river. This is already proceeding well, with the Vice Chancellor’s and Facilities Manager’s support. As a result of the work of Podnik Ltd (involved in sourcing the Buckingham Bag) a pre-feasibility study has already started, funded by the University.
2. Air source heat pumps – Podnik Ltd are also exploring this as another source of environmentally sustainable power for the University. The University’s Vice Chancellor and management support this and other ideas to reduce the University’s Carbon Footprint.
3. Printer cartridges – The Green Buckingham Group is investigating the possibility of having collection points for printer cartridges in convenient locations in the town. The cartridges would be used to help a charity to earn extra income.
4. Smart meters – The Green Buckingham Group is investigating the possibility of setting up some case studies with households in Buckingham to encourage power saving.
5. Batteries – The group planned to promote battery collection, but as Currys has a collection bin for used batteries, in accordance with the forthcoming EU Directive which requires battery suppliers to provide disposal facilities, it will not be necessary for the group to take any further action.
In March 2010 we held a successful Green Fair in Buckingham. Information about this was published in the Buckingham & Winslow Advertiser.
